Ruth Benton-Blackmore, painter and illustrator, trained at Sheffield College of Art,
L'Ecole des Beaux Arts Paris and Goldsmiths London. Ruth has produced illustrations for Dorling Kindersley, Blackwells and various other well known publishers. She has edited and illustrated three titles for the Hodder Graphic series. Most recently she has been working on a new series of paintings and introduces them on this website.

These paintings revolve around the idea of ageing, the clown costumes symbolising the joke age plays on us. Nobody looks at the individual  behind the ruff and the pom poms, he is labelled 'clown' and there is no other dimension.
Similarly many in our society on reaching a certain age are labelled 'old' and assume the two dimensional cut out
status of the clown.
However these clowns are fighting back! They engage
the viewer with an intense gaze and express character, individuality and vitality.
